SUNRISE ENGLISH PROGRAM
PUBLIC SCHOOL, PLAYA HERRADURA
Our Christian ESL program is a critical part of our strategy to provide hope for the future to disadvantaged children and youth.
It's often said that English is the language of opportunity. This is because English is the global "bridge language" that connects people around the world. Nearly 70% of online educational information is in English. If you speak English, you have the ability to communicate, travel and work anywhere. This is especially true in Jaco, the surrounding area, and the entire country of Costa Rica, where there are a large number of English-speaking residents, businesses and jobs.
We have partnered with the public school in Playa Herradura to provide free Christian classroom English instruction. We have approximately 25 students and 10 volunteers. We provide classes at the school on Saturday mornings. This school has a total of 1,200 students in grades K-6. Our English program has tremendous potential for growth.
Our volunteers are encouraged to develop relationships with the students during class. Bible verses and truths are incorporated into our classes through prayers and short devotions. The need for English makes it easy for us to obey the Great Commission of “making disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28)
The Sunrise ESL program is part of our strategy to open new doors of opportunity for at risk youth. Honestly, this program came to us very suddenly. We are in the process of developing prayer partners, recruiting and training our volunteers, adapting to student fluency levels, and preparing for future growth.
Please pray for clear presentations of the Gospel, strong relationships with students and families, character development, increased language ability for the students, and protection for all involved.
